Ocean Health Index 10-Year Impact Report
2021
Researched and wrote a story-based report that summarizes and celebrates the achievements, lessons learned and impact of the Ocean Health Index (OHI) after 10 years, highlighting regional case studies of how the Index has been used to inform marine resource management and policy around the world.
Offshore Aquaculture Production
2021
Conducted a literature review and composed a manuscript for academic publication on global offshore aquaculture production — including the current state of the industry, potential environmental impacts, and risk mitigation strategies for expanding US production — to inform EDF's advocacy strategy and evolving US policy on the subject.
Electronic Monitoring Roadmap for RFMOs
2019
Worked with CEA and the Pew Charitable Trusts to create a roadmap for EM implementation. This report explores the necessary elements of a well-designed EM program and explores unique considerations for fisheries that are managed by an RFMO.
Fisheries Technology Funding Priorities
2020
Conducted a landscape assessment of Fisheries Technology Funding Priorities for EDF, which describes funding sources and trends, as well as where there is current energy for technological innovation to support sustainable fisheries. This research was based on dozens of expert survey responses, interviews, and a thorough review of relevant web resources.
Overfishing & Human Rights Abuses
2019
Developed and facilitated an expert working group convening in San Francisco, CA to build a set of shared research methodologies for better understanding the connections between overfishing and human rights in global fisheries. The participants forged new partnerships, drafted concept notes and preliminary work plans. Download report →
Allocating Rights in Fisheries
2017
Designed and facilitated a 6 month research process (including a participatory workshop) to develop innovative approaches for allocating rights in fisheries that address the shortcomings of catch-history based methods. Paper published in Ocean & Coastal Management. Continue reading →
Eliminating Discards in Fisheries
2016
Co-authored EDF's Eliminating Discards Guide, which discusses different design options to help fishery managers, fishermen and other stakeholders achieve a shared goal to reduce, and even eliminate, discarding practices in a fishery with secure fishing rights. Continue reading →
Marine Ecology Research
2010
During my time at Stanford, I researched many topics in marine ecology, including: diet and tumors in Hawaiian green sea turtles; ocean acidification and coral-algal phase shifts on the Great Barrier Reef; and oceanography and marine physiology of squid in the Central Tropical Pacific Ocean.
